In a pioneering effort to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and foster safer public spaces, UNFPA Sri Lanka has teamed up with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) to tackle sexual harassment in public transport. This collaboration included an insightful awareness session for SLTB staff, aimed at equipping them with the knowledge and tools to prevent and respond to incidents of harassment.
The session, which was led by the CEO of SLTB and attended by staff members from various departments, highlighted the importance of creating a safe and respectful environment for all passengers. The training underscored the need for a proactive approach to address issues of harassment, emphasizing the responsibility of both transport staff and the public in ensuring that public transportation remains a safe space for everyone.
UNFPA Sri Lanka’s involvement in this initiative is part of its broader commitment to combat GBV and promote gender equality. Through educational programs and collaborative efforts with local organizations and government bodies, UNFPA works to raise awareness about the harmful impacts of GBV and the importance of creating safe spaces, particularly in public sectors like transportation.
The session was not only a vital opportunity to educate SLTB staff but also a key step in generating long-term change that ensures safety for all passengers. By working together, UNFPA Sri Lanka and SLTB aim to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for women and other vulnerable groups in public transport systems across the country.
