Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for Asia and the Pacific, Pio Smith, engaged in a pivotal meeting with Hon. Tharaka Balasuriya, the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.

Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for Asia and the Pacific, Pio Smith, engaged in a pivotal meeting with Hon. Tharaka Balasuriya, the State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka. The meeting, held at the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored the importance of reinforcing commitments towards the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action.

Joined by Majintha Jayesinghe, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Aruni Y. Wijewardane, Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sri Lanka, the discussion focused on various aspects of advancing sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and women’s empowerment (SRH, GEWE) within Sri Lanka's developmental framework.

During the meeting, the UNFPA's Regional Director emphasized the importance of aligning Sri Lanka's policies with the goals outlined in the ICPD Programme of Action, underscoring the need for sustained efforts in addressing challenges and gaps. The meeting highlighted Sri Lanka's significant achievements in SRH, gender-based violence (GBV), and population dynamics over the past five decades, acknowledging the government's partnership with UNFPA as a vital development ally.

UNFPA reiterated its commitment to supporting the Government of Sri Lanka in achieving gender equality and empowering women, aligning with international obligations and normative frameworks. The discussion with the State Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized inclusive strategies that address changing demographics and climate change impacts, particularly focusing on the gender dimensions of climate resilience.

During the meeting, UNFPA highlighted its ongoing collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka, emphasizing effective policy changes, system strengthening, and community mobilization in critical areas such as family planning, maternal health, and GBV prevention and response.

UNFPA remains dedicated to its partnership with Sri Lanka, working closely with government agencies, civil society organizations, and donors to advance the country's development agenda and ensure the rights and choices of all individuals.
