UNFPA Sri Lanka reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and addressing gender-based violence (GBV) during a meeting with the newly appointed Minister for Women and Child Affairs, Hon. Sarojini Paulraj. The meeting underscored the shared vision of UNFPA and the Ministry to scale up policy and system-level support to create a safer, more equitable environment for women and girls in Sri Lanka.

During the discussion, UNFPA Sri Lanka emphasized its dedication to supporting the Ministry in strengthening policies, systems, and programs that promote gender equality and empower women and girls across the country. This collaboration aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader efforts to address structural challenges and ensure sustainable progress in achieving gender equity.

The meeting was followed by UNFPA Sri Lanka’s participation in the 16 Days Of Activism Launch Event, organized by the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign to raise awareness and inspire action to end GBV.

The Ministry and UNFPA Sri Lanka have made significant strides in tackling GBV through comprehensive programs, including policy support, awareness campaigns, and capacity building. Key areas of collaboration include prevention and response initiatives, such as psychosocial support, access to survivor services, and educational programs to address harmful social norms.

The 16 Days Of Activism event served as a powerful reminder of the need for sustained efforts to address GBV, emphasizing the critical role of partnerships in driving meaningful change. UNFPA Sri Lanka remains committed to working alongside the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and other stakeholders to empower women, protect the most vulnerable, and create an inclusive society free from violence.
