A stakeholder consultation on Barriers to Women’s Political Participation brought together key partners, policymakers, and advocates to discuss the challenges that hinder women’s meaningful engagement in political and decision-making processes. The event, supported by UNFPA Sri Lanka, emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts to promote gender-inclusive leadership and ensure women’s voices are not only heard but actively valued in shaping policies and governance.

The consultation served as a platform to identify persistent barriers preventing women’s participation, including societal norms, structural inequalities, lack of access to resources, and discriminatory practices. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions to explore solutions for creating an enabling environment where women can lead and contribute effectively to decision-making at all levels.

The consultation also underscored the critical role of partnerships between governments, civil society, and international organizations in advancing women’s political empowerment. Discussions focused on strategies to increase women’s access to leadership opportunities, strengthen policy frameworks, and challenge harmful gender norms that limit their participation.

This consultation aligns with ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in Sri Lanka and reinforces the need for sustained action to ensure women have equal opportunities to lead, influence, and drive positive change.
