In a significant step towards addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and ensuring safer public spaces, UNFPA Sri Lanka conducted an awareness session for the staff of the National Transport Commission (NTC). The session focused on recognizing, preventing, and responding to sexual harassment in both workplaces and public spaces, emphasizing the critical role of transport authorities in creating safer environments for all.
The interactive session provided participants with practical insights on understanding GBV, identifying incidents of harassment, and implementing measures to ensure the safety and dignity of commuters. Discussions highlighted the importance of equipping frontline staff with the knowledge and tools to respond effectively to harassment and foster a culture of zero tolerance for violence.
UNFPA Sri Lanka’s collaboration with the NTC is part of a broader initiative to tackle GBV, promote gender equality, and create safer public spaces. Recognizing that harassment on public transport disproportionately impacts women and girls, this partnership seeks to drive systemic change through awareness, education, and stronger institutional responses.
This session is the first step in a larger initiative to enhance safety in public transport systems across Sri Lanka. UNFPA Sri Lanka and the National Transport Commission will continue to collaborate on training programs, awareness campaigns, and the development of policies to prevent and respond to GBV in transport settings.
Through these efforts, both organizations reaffirm their commitment to building safer, more inclusive public spaces, where the rights and dignity of all individuals are protected.
