In a significant step toward improving support for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), UNFPA Sri Lanka held a productive discussion with Hon. Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security, on strengthening police response mechanisms across the country.

Expanding Survivor-Centered Spaces

One of the key focus areas of the discussion was the expansion of Emergency Waiting Areas (EWAs) in police stations. These dedicated spaces provide a safe and survivor-centered environment for women and girls seeking protection and assistance. Enhancing these facilities will help ensure that survivors receive dignified, sensitive, and timely support when reporting incidents of violence.

Building Stronger Community Interactions

Beyond physical spaces, the conversation also highlighted the importance of strengthening community engagement to improve trust in law enforcement and encourage survivors to seek help without fear or stigma. A collaborative approach—involving police, social services, and civil society—will be essential in building an effective and compassionate response system.

Advancing Safety, Dignity, and Rights

By working together, we can strengthen institutional responses and reinforce Sri Lanka’s commitment to upholding the safety, dignity, and rights of all women and girls. UNFPA Sri Lanka remains dedicated to supporting national efforts to create a safer, more just society for everyone.
