The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), has shipped the first batch of vital Dignity and Maternity Kits to 1050 flood-affected women and girls in the Malimbada, Akuressa, and Kamburupitiya Divisions of Matara District.
These kits, abiding by UNFPA's global standards and providing essential sexual and reproductive health and hygiene supplies, are a cornerstone of UNFPA's humanitarian response. Tailored for the early stages of a crisis, kits help maintain proper hygiene, reduce health risks, and support the physical and emotional well-being of vulnerable populations during crises. The distribution is organized by the Ministry of Women, Child Affairs, and Social Empowerment.
UNFPA's distribution of maternity kits targets maternal and newborn well-being, relieving financial burdens on vulnerable families. These kits encompass a comprehensive range of items, including bed sheets, towels, underwear, maternity bed jackets, breastfeeding bras, chintz cloths, sanitary pads, toothpaste, toothbrushes, detergent, soap, and slippers for pregnant individuals. They also provide diapers, baby clothes, mackintosh, and essential hygiene products for newborns. In low-income communities, they alleviate the significant cost barrier to accessing essential childbirth items. A total of 50 maternity kits will be distributed among flood-affected populations, with a focus on expectant and new mothers.
An additional 1,000 dignity kits are provided to safeguard the physical and psychological health of women and girls during humanitarian crises. These kits contain vital personal care items like soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary pads, and clothing. UNFPA's commitment to preserving dignity and hygiene helps protect against gender-based violence and promotes overall well-being within affected populations.
